Notes on the Listening Examples

Example 1

North Indian Classical Music

A brief alap, followed by medium and fast gats in raga Yaman

(c-d-e-f#-g-a-b) and tintal rhythm (4+4+4+4)

sitar: Sudhir Phadke; tabla: Anand Badamikar

The first thing that is heard in this example is the tanbura, and then the sympathetic strings being strummed/plucked with the player's long pinky nail. A short alap follows. Listen to the ways the performer emphasizes certain pitches and how he approaches/arrives at them.

When the tabla enters try to count out the 16 beat tintal cycle. Listen to how the sitar player creates certain phrases that emphasize the rhythm (sometimes repeats phrases in groups of three). Usually, these phrases emphasize the 1 in the 16 beat cycle.
